The Event

The last total eclipse Europe saw was in 1999

The Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, and for a brief window the solar corona becomes visible to the naked eye. This is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe in 27 years.

The path of totality

The shadow crosses Greenland and Iceland, then makes landfall over northern Spain at sunset. Times below are local to each location.

Madrid and Barcelona are outside the path — they see only a deep partial eclipse. Travel north to reach totality; 99% is not the same event.

Eye safety is not optional

Looking at the partially eclipsed Sun without certified protection causes permanent retinal damage. Use only eclipse glasses meeting the ISO 12312-2 standard — sunglasses do not work. Glasses come off only during totality, and go straight back on the instant the Sun returns.
